I. Brief review of previous meeting and updates on other relevant local activity
A. Alderson Broaddus
1. AB has a plan to have a better link between WVU and the hospital; they have received a major grant to pursue this link.
2. AB is a member of the Appalachian Colleges Association, a consortium of 30 colleges that is very strong at getting grant funding. The Association is probably going to be doing a feasibility study for a major grant application ($1 million for the 30 colleges) for faculty to link up with businesses and the community. One of AB's faculty will be involved.
B. There is Internet access at some schools, but not at others.
II. Suggestion and ideas of what should we do in Philippi?
A. Identify resources and work together to fon-n a strategic plan of sorts.
B. Get some money to hire someone (a professional) to coordinate.
C. To secure grant funding, there needs to be an emphasis on access for low and moderate income individuals.
D. This effort could possibly tie in as part of Barbour County Net.
III. Next steps - a two stage process
A. Initially, we will pull together everyone who is interested:
1 . Those attending will have the opportunity to make a brief presentation on their technological capabilities.
2. The presentations will serve as an introduction for a brainstorming session.
3. To facilitate the brainstorming session, we will have prepared a possible draft blueprint or guideline of how a technology plan would look; members of this group will each send some suggestions for this blueprint and their expectations for this session to Jeff Neurman at the WVRDC by Monday, August 19, 1996.
4. We will send a letter of invitation to the following groups with the information from #3 included along with a summary of Barbour County Net which basically explains where things are now. The meeting will be held in mid-September. The groups identified are:
1) AB
2) hospital
3) the 3 cities
4) the county
5) schools - principals, media specialists and PTA officers
6) private sector
7) C.A.R.E.
8) both libraries
9) Jack Kirby
10) Chamber of Commerce
11) Development Authority
12) Board of Education
13) Convention and Visitors Bureau
14) TCI
15) Philippi Cable
16) RESA
B. Following the strategic planning, we will take technology to various community groups such as PTAS. We will try to visit the groups twice, each time doing a brief presentation on technology relevant to the group's particular interests. This will hopefully create more grass-roots interest and alleviate some apprehension.
